Would You Continue to Give Money to a Family With a Gambling Problem?

by laszy

Question by Gadfly: Would you continue to give money to a family with a gambling problem?
If in your neighborhood, a family headed by parents with a gambling addiction and extravagant spending habits was about to go bankrupt, would it be ethical to take money from the other more responsible families in the neighborhood to enable this family to continue it’s destructive behavior. Should your children suffer economical for the destructive and irresponsible behavior of someone else?

How does the above situation differ from the huge bailouts to states like California that do not even claim they will change the policies that are driving business and jobs out of the state and bankrupting them. Should the citizens of other more responsible states be forced to continue enabling this type behavior by having their tax dollars used in “Stimulus” packages at the the detriment of their own states and families?
@jehen
If the money went to those that were innocent victims of the housing collapse and was not divvied up by corrupt bearcats and used in programs and policies that create more victims and further the economic collapse, I would be more in favor of it.

While their is plenty of blame to go around, the collapse would never have occurred without the policies that encouraged lenders to make bad loans and back them up with tax payer money.
In my neighborhood scenario, I should have made it clear that the children of the bankrupt family should be taken care of as they did not vote for their irresponsible parents. Giving money to their parents who do not even admit their problem is not a way to effectively help the children and would in all likelihood teach the children that their parents conduct is acceptable and continue the destructive cycle.
While this question was not meant to exclusively address the Housing issue as my use of “Stimulus” might have been interpreted, my feelings on the root cause of that disaster can be found in my response to http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aryy3gjCW_OhU.gZMIrxniLty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100404163059AAtkIPX&show=7#profile-info-aplf245haa.

Cal.is a prime example of what not to do.The liberals have spent themselves into a hole so deep only real cuts in there social agenda will pull them out but they still have not learned.

Answer by Natty-Lea
No. They should give them food tokens, and some vouchers for child clothing stores, so they are able to take care of their children, but it’s ridiculous to give them cash if they have such an addiction. Maybe they should be asked to see a therapist, or go to Gamblers Anonymous in order to receive their money. :-/
