Pornography: What Is Your Opinion?
Question by doc j: Pornography: What is your opinion?
I have been assigned a rhetorical essay assignment in my upper division English class. My argument focuses the consequences of viewing pornography excessively. Professional opinion on this topic varies widely. In your view, is frequent viewing of pornography an addiction similar to drug abuse, gambling, and the alike, or is it merely a matter of choice?
What I’m struggling with is the fact that by definition, the term addiction “involves severe trauma resulting from cessation.”

I think the term addiction is the right one for viewing pornography. not just viewing it excessively, but watching/reading it AT ALL.
Your thought processes are a matter of choice. You CAN control your thoughts, and emotions. Watching porn is a choice, but shows a mind that has given up attempts at control. Such minds are incapable of stopping, and forcible cessation with such an attitude WILL cause severe trauma.
That makes it an addiction. The choice to stop, as with all addictions, MUST come from within.
Addictions definition:
The term “addiction” is used in many contexts to describe an obsession, compulsion, or excessive psychological dependence, such as: drug addiction (e.g. alcoholism), video game addiction, crime, money, work addiction, compulsive overeating, problem gambling, computer addiction, nicotine addiction, pornography addiction.

I am assuming your research would focus primarily on males who watch porn versus females.
Males who watch porn often become desensitized to sex and violence. They begin to believe the images portrayed are normal when in reality they are not. They also become disconnected between the image and the emotion. Therefore they do not make the connection the sex=an emotional response.
As for being an addiction, no. Addictions are physical.

Hi my name is Andrew. My sister saw Shokat on the TV and then read more about it on the internet. My brother in law then bought me to see Shokat and also helped me to finance the programme. Over the last 10 years I must have lost over £100000 on gambling. The stress of gambling was making me ill. I neglected every aspect of my life because of this. Gambling on the roulette tables was running my life. I would get paid and then be drawn to the roulette table where I would lose all my money. I would feel physically sick after losing all my money and become depressed and promise myself I would never gamble again. The following week I would end up gambling again. After the first session three weeks ago, I have lost all compulsion to gamble. I have been surprised it has been that easy. A week after my treatment I deliberately went into the bookies to see what would happen. I could see other people gamble but not once was I tempted to place a bet. In the past if I ever went to the bookies I would play and nothing could tear me away from plying roulette until I had lost all my money. I now have a life thanks to you. Andrew from Birmingham.
