Question by Dave: I’m concerned about my hair. It has thinned over the last several years.?
I am using Minoxidil 5% twice per day, Biotin 5000 mcg once a day. I used Finasteride up until about six months ago after reading up on the side effects more so. I had been using it since 2005 and the Minoxidil and Biotin since about 2004. I have annual checkups with a dermatologist. I am not yet a candidate for hair transplantation. The Finasteride really helped and I have really noticed a difference since I stopped taking it, but my health is more important and I would like to have children one day. I was recently to Hair Club and was told I’d be a candidate for the Biomatrix. I just don’t have the extra money to put in right now for the time and travel this would cost. I’m not sure if there is something else out there I could use, any other form of treatment, shampoo, etc. that may help to regrow hair or make it look fuller, also something that’s reasonably affordable. Should I continue what I’m doing now or wait until my hair loss progresses more so before I do anything further? I’m also not sure what are the safest methods and what to stay away from. Any way would be greatly appreciated.

Any reactions to a drug – like Vitamin B complex which is a supplement – ‘side effect’ is a negative reaction to a drug – this is your body telling you that what you just gave it is toxic to it, and instead of helping you, it is actually hurting you.  It is your body’s way of telling you to stop.  All drugs have side effects, and are toxic…even lethal…to some people at some dosage.  Another term for toxic is poisonous.  We owe it to ourselves to try less toxic treatments first.  Especially since too many drugs merely cover up symptoms rather than treat the underlying cause of the symptom in the first place. Another example: Green Tea supplement: Green tea extract supplements have been linked to several cases of liver damage. Green tea extracts might make liver disease worse.

What should you do if you think that you may have hair loss? First, call your dermatologist today! If you don’t have one, visit the “Find a Doctor” portion of the website of the American Academy of Dermatology. Secondly, when you visit your dermatologist, have a list of your medications, allergies, medical conditions and your hair care practices (for example: relaxers for 20 years, hot combs for 10 years, no weaves, braids with extensions for two years and natural styles for the last 5 years). Do not be afraid if your doctor suggests blood test, a scalp biopsy or culture.
