If I Were to Quit Smoking Now, Will I Always Be “in a Constant State of Recovery”?

Question by Evan: If I were to quit smoking now, will I always be “in a constant state of recovery”?
So, I’m a 21 year old college guy that took up smoking as a way to curb academic stress. I thought I could handle it, just smoking one or two a day. This very quickly became three, then four, then more and more as I found new ways to rationalize my increased nicotine intake. I started smoking the summer before my junior year. I am now a senior, so I’ve been smoking about a year and a half, give or take. I’ve often heard that addicts are never fully healed, that rather they are in a constant state of recovery. This notion severely disturbs me; I am fearful of having to live with my mistake for the rest of my life. I’ve already resolved to quit smoking cold turkey over Christmas Break; the added presence of my family will help me curb my smoking as they do not yet know of my destructive habit. I’d rather just quit before they ever find out to avoid hurting my parents emotionally. But, will I have to live with nicotine addiction forever? Will I ever conceivably be able to look at a cigarette again without being “triggered”? Or is it something I will just have to live with? Either way, I’m quitting; I just want to know what the long-term mental repercussions will be, so I know what to expect.

I hear ya man I’m 18 about to go to college and started when I was 16. Basically after the first 10 days it gets easier and not harsh cravings. Replace smoking with healthier replacement like working out. that relieves stress and you’ll feel better and proud of yourself after u quit. Also you’ve only smoked for a year I think its for pol whom smoked for many years never recover. Never give up!
