Brother Has Gambling Addiction?

Question by Sam C: brother has gambling addiction?
i am 13 and my brother is 21. he has been playing poker for 4 years and before he turned 21 he was playing illegaly to. now i dont want you to tell me that thats a big crime and all that stuff because i dont care. he has this huge addiction to gambling and its tearing my family apart. he still lives in our house and had jobs before but they dont last long. he wasnt always this way. throughout high school he was a smart student and he took a semester in Rutgers newark. my parents are making him pay rent each month to support the family since he doesnt have a job and my mom lost her job in the economy crisis. the only income is coming from my dad who is a car mechanic. were not really poor because my mom had a good job working for merryl lynch. anyway, is it a good idea that my parents are making my brother pay rent. he stopped doing so and my mom is paying for his credit cards and phone bills. I love my brother we all do but i just cant take the fighting anymore and its making me want to run away because they dont understand that im getting hurt the most from all the fights. my parents are going to a gambling addiction “shrink” for ideas but my brother doesnt want to cooperate. so im asking you guys, what is the best way to stop this addiction and my family life once again “almost normal”

Stop paying his credit card bills. Eventually he will need to get help from a credit counseling organization who will arrange with the creditors a set amount for him to pay them each month till the debts are paid off. If he breaks this deal with them the creditors will take it from his wages through a court action. Let him take responsibility for his actions otherwise your parents will be stuck in a continuing cycle of throwing money down the toilet for years on end. Cutting his funds to gamble is the only sane way to proceed. His recovery from addiction will be fairly swift. Your parents are heading for serious debt problems if they don’t bite the bullet now. Hang on in there kid. Life is a lot tougher if you run away. Find the strength to stay and be there for your Mom.
