Admissions to alcohol addiction rehab facilities were previously assumed to slow down in times of economic recession when people have a less flexible income. It was originally thought that when times were tough, families would cut out all non-essential spending and try to conserve as much cash as possible until their financial situation improved. However, a new study completed by the Health Economics Research Group at the University of Miami contradicts the previous study and has found that economic uncertainty and financial disruption such as a job loss actually results in an increase in risky drinking and subsequently alcoholism and alcohol addiction rehab admissions.

An interesting factoid that came from the study was that gender, race and age played absolutely no role in skewing the results. Across the board men, women, African-American, Caucasian, Hispanic and Asian individuals between the ages of 25-29 all showed an increase in drinking with an increase in unemployment rates.

Why Do People Drink More When They Lose Their Job or Have Financial Troubles?

There are a couple interpretations currently that are accepted by psychiatrists and alcohol addiction rehab counselors alike. The group’s main explanation is the link between unemployment and an increased level of stress that can come as a result. Losing a job causes stress, plain and simple. The fear of losing a job as unemployment rates continue to be high also causes anxiety and worry. Individuals often abuse alcohol in an effort to combat stress. In fact, that’s how many alcohol addictions begin. Alcohol starts off as your go-to “stress reliever” and soon enough, you can’t seem to get through the day without it. These dependencies can happen quickly and without full knowledge and understanding of the individual engaging in the abuse. While most people understand that increasing their level of drinking during times of economic woe will not solve their financial trouble, they seem to be throwing caution to the wind and doing it anyway.
