Hospital Discrimination Against Drug User – This was an interview I did with a guy who was/is an IV drug user. He describes how he went to the ER for a bad hernia, got as far as being prepped for surgery,and was then told to get up, get dressed, and go home, after the hospital staff realized he was an addict. At the time of the interview, he still had the hernia (he showed it to me) and was waiting for an appointment with a GP,who would send him to a specialist, who would order tests that would take up to several weeks or even months to get. This is not an isolated incident. I have talked to several people who have had the same experience. it is common knowledge that Doctors in Montreal hospital ERs discriminate against IVDUs. I also have several friends who are doctors, who have disclosed to me that it is common practice to send someone away if they have a history of drug use, under the rationale that if their complaint is serious enough they will return. Unless, of course, they have something obvious wrong with them, like they have been in a car accident, which clearly requires immediate attention. Anyone who comes in with complaints of pain of which the source cannot be easily identified is sent home. An IVDU will be sent home with a condition that another person would receive immediate assistance for. THIS IS REAL.
