Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers: Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers and How They Work
by wannaoreo
There is no question about it; substance addiction is a hard disease to conquer. There are many hurdles to overcome, including both physical and psychological symptoms. Sometimes, the best way to overcome substance addiction is through drug and alcohol treatment centers. These are centers that specialize in overcoming addiction by addressing all aspects of the disease while providing a safe environment for the patient at all times. While the programs offered at drug and alcohol treatment centers are quite diverse, there are three main components to help a patient in the treatment of dependency: locked wards, individual counseling sessions, and group support.
The first step for most drug and alcohol treatment centers is to check into the locked ward of the clinic. The reason for the center being in a locked environment is not to keep patients in; rather it is a way to ensure that no contraband substances can get into the environment. Patients are thoroughly searched before being allowed to unpack their belongings in their rooms to ensure that they aren’t attempting to smuggle in drugs or alcohol. They are then watched very closely for the first couple of days of treatment to help them through the detoxing period. During this time, the body will be fighting the physical side of the disease. An addicted body can go through stages of shaking, throwing up, weakness, or a variety of other symptoms. Trained medical professionals are on hand at all times to ensure that the patients come to no harm.
Once the body is purged of any traces of the substance, the real program can begin. The staff and workers at drug and alcohol treatment centers are all trained professionals, who have often gone through the same experiences as the patients before them. They are able to help with one on one counseling on what the patients can expect to have happen in the future, as well as what they are going through right at that moment. Psychologists will sit down with the patients to analyze exactly why the patient feels the need to use in the first place. Often, understanding why the need to use is there is a help in removing that need. All of the staff members are there to help patients out and can answer questions and be there for support 24 hours a day.
The third prong in drug and alcohol treatment centers is group support. Patients who check into centers are put into a ward with other people who are going through the same treatment program. When sitting down as a group and discussing the various factors of the disease, the patient can see that there are normal people who are experiencing the same problems that they are. This can be a huge aid in treatment since the patient knows that they are not alone in what they are feeling. These groups will encourage each other through all stages of their rehabilitation, offering support for each other. Watching another patient overcome his or her problems is a great way for the patient to see that the program truly works.
When deciding that it is time to overcome addiction, drug and alcohol treatment centers have higher success rates than just about any other program available today. With trained doctors to help with the physical aspects of the addictions, counselors available at all times to help with the psychology of the disease, and other patients there to support each other through the entire process, these centers will offer very intense experiences but will prove to be worth it in the end.
