MY FRIEND and I: By Loredana Gasporatto
My friends I is the story of a teenage girl and her group of friends who become involved with heroine addiction and the lifestyle that comes along with it. Janis is a lonely and confused sixteen year old, who lives with her divorced mother and her brother in Washington Heights, New York. She begins hanging out with Debbie, a classmate from dance class, who introduces her to an alternative and hippy crowd of other teenagers. They all get together on the Lower East Side, where they use drugs and listen to rave music to spend their weekends. Janis, intrigued by that scene, begins to go with them and to get high to be part of that group. She also meets Rick, seventeen years old, whom she falls for. When Rick starts using heroin, they drift apart and Janis slowly convinces herself to try it as well, to overcome her sense of isolation with the group and to get close to Rick again. When she becomes addicted to it like her friends, a new life of prostitution begins too. After an unsuccessful attempt to detoxify, Janis spirals down even more without hope, until she discovers that her friend Debbie is prematurely dead from an overdose and her mother takes her away from the city to live with her grandparents in the country side and start a new life.
FULL ARTICLE bit.ly There are tens of thousands of drug-related deaths in Russia each year. This year, Russia became the biggest consumer of heroin in the world. Almost 70 tons of it seeps across the Afghan border to Central Asia. And than its poisonous river makes its way across Siberia, to the Russian Capital — here to Moscow – and than runs further to the most remote Russian provinces and villages. Just last month, the head of this ministry — the ministry of drug control — Igor Ivanov realized he couldn’t do much about the traffic here at home. So he packed up, gathered his team and flew to Afghanistan. The country is exhausted after 30 years of nonstop war. People there live on pennies, children play with rocks — the only source of money for many people is poppies. Russia’s plan was to persuade NATO to cut down heroine production by spraying the poppie fields. Not all of these plans worked out.
