Gambling Problem, How to Get Off It? It’s Like a Drug.?

Question by Andrew Ryan: Gambling problem, how to get off it? It’s like a drug.?
Ok, I have a seriously big gambling problem and I would like to know how I can stop it… Here’s the whole story.

Okay, I never really was a big gambling person until one night my brother convinced me to register onto an online poker community. It was free for the first couple of game but then they started charging you. £5 here, £10 there, all affordable. Nothing big. This continued for about every night of a month, I would stay on from about 7, when I got home from work and would continue up until about 4am. Then a group of lads from work offered me a game round his house with about 6 of us total. Nothing big. £50 buyin and I walked away with 25. Then that started to become a regular thing, every other night. Then came the tournament with the big people, people who lived near me but wherelike the local gangsters. Then me and my wife went to las Vegas for a holiday (she still didn’t know about this problem) and when we were their… I actually spent more time at the table then I did with her. And I actually asked her for her knecklace for the pot and needles to say, she want very please. Anyway. My problem started escalating, wen in the office I would think all day about getting home to go out and play poker. And when someone would ask me a quton I would answer it in poker terms so if someone would of asked me a question and I would have sad no then i would say ‘fold’. Then it was really geting bad, I was bring big money to the table every nigt. I remember driving up in an Audi and a £200 suit and walking home in a t-shirt and trousers only. I was going to loan sharks for money then dishing onto the table. I actually sold my wedding ring and engagement ring to a pawn broker for money to then go and play poker. Vegas was a monthly vacation. I was basically giving my life away. I signed up to a donation plan to donate a kidney but found that you got no money for it so I left. But that was only in the true escalating time of it. I have calmed down and am only spending about £35 a night, but I would still like to get off fully. Then a d then only can I be happy.
Sorry for a story longer than a chapter in the bible but I had to get it out in the open and it feels good to.
Any help on how to quit loosing 60 dollars a day?

Studies show people who drop one addiction take up another. Once you come out of childhood you’ve got 1 or 2 addictions. (everyone has at least one)

Some people smoke cigarettes

Some people drink

Some people eat

Some people have to gamble.

Me? I chew my nails and lie. Like…ALL the time, sometimes I lie even when I don’t have to. Today a friend asked me if i drank his Arizona Iced Tea, I didn’t but I said i did. Why? Because, that’s why

You’ll never be able to get over addiction. Never. it’s okay because nobody does. BUT you can replace that addiction with a healthier one or at least a cheaper one. Try smoking or sky diving or maybe a sex addiction. As for changing it? YOU HAVE TO WANT IT! If you don’t want it bad enough then you’ll never have it. If you need help then find someone to be your spotter. He’ll be responsible for you and he’ll make sure you don’t gamble until you’re over it and he can remind you why you need to stop when you need to be reminded.
