Do You Agree That “addictions” Should Be a Viable Reason for Criminal Behaviour?

Question by charlottey: Do you agree that “addictions” should be a viable reason for criminal behaviour?
In many court cases, the defence has claimed that their client was/is suffering from an addiction and this led to their criminal behaviour. Addictions such as gambling, drug, alcohol, and now even sexual/pornographic “addictions” are being considered in court.
Do you think addictions are real? And do you think they should be a valid reason or partial reason for criminal acts?

Many addictions are real (sex excluded, that’s sill), but NO excuse for criminal behavior.

“I was addicted to booze, and couldn’t contol myself; I don’t recall killing my wife…”

The vast majority of addicted people will not commit crimes to support their habits, other than the actual crime of consuming illegal drugs or driving drunk. Criminal activity is a moral failing, not a usual characteristic of addiction, thus NO excuses.

I agree with Phil…

The whole concept of addiction as a defense is absolutely ridiculous. Attorneys come up with grabage like addiction for defense of a client and expect rational people to buy into it. Addictions are real but using it in defense of a crime is complete bulllshittt.
